Sickle Cell Disease is the most common genetic disease in the world. Sickle cell disease is an inherited disease in which a person does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Sickle cell disease affects the oxygen-carrying protein inside the red blood cells called hemoglobin.

Sickle Cell Trait People who inherit one sickle cell gene and one normal gene have sickle cell trait (SCT). People with sickle cell trait usually do not have any of the symptoms of sickle cell disease (SCD), but they can pass the trait on to their children.
